In 1792, Paterson was established, America's first planned industrial city, centered around the Great Falls of the Passaic River. The Paterson Great Falls can be viewed from Overlook Park, as well as from Mary Ellen Kramer Park off of Maple Avenue. Three overlooks give different views of the Great Falls. Today, the natural oasis is surrounded by a unique urban park setting as the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park. General George Washington even picnicked by the waterfall with the Marquis de Lafayette, Alexander Hamilton, and James McHenry during the Revolutionary War on July 10, 1778. ![]() ![]() The success of this ambitious plan served to support the United States’ economic independence. ![]() Paterson, the nation’s first planned industrial city, was founded by Alexander Hamilton when implementing an innovative hydropower system using the Passaic River to power nearby mills. Since it is a state park, admission for the day is 8 if you do no have a yearly parks pass. Parking is located on McBride Avenue across the street from the parks welcome. You can visit from the top or bottom, but no drones The falls. It is located off exit 57B on Route 80 which is also accessible from highway 287. The majestic Paterson Great Falls plunge 77 feet into a 300-foot-wide chasm and have long been a source of inspiration and power. Pattison State Park is a great state park that offers scenic views with plenty of hiking if you're so inclined. A national park site, Paterson Great Falls sits in the heart of Paterson. ![]()
